This Tuesday, December 12, Las Torres Hotel celebrates its 31st anniversary. The hotel commemorates more than three decades of history as a benchmark for sustainable hospitality in one of the most striking locations in our country: Torres del Paine National Park. In the 20th century, the majestic granite towers became a unique geographical point and a must-see destination for adventure lovers and travelers worldwide.
Hotel Beginnings
“In the mid-80s, if three souls passed through this place in the summer, it was a lot,” remember the members of the Kusanovic family, founders of Hotel Las Torres. A little less than a decade would pass before, in the 1990s, Torres del Paine became an internationally recognized attraction. After that, travelers from different continents came to the south of the world to visit the eighth wonder of the world.
In 1992, one of the family wrote one of their most important chapters. This date was the year the first version of Hotel Las Torres opened, with nine rooms and its Coirón restaurant. Week after week, this new hotel extended a welcome to dozens of explorers who visited Patagonia’s geography.
By 2013, the family decided to dedicate themselves solely to tourism, leaving aside the life of livestock farming. The family moved the cattle to Puerto Natales, freeing up the land for conservation. Sustainable tourism became the family’s sole business after achieving this milestone.
Today, more than 30 years after the hotel began, it has 74 rooms and a restaurant with a view of Torres del Paine National Park, making it a gastronomic destination for travelers worldwide. The hotel also has the southernmost sustainable bar in Chile and a wellness center. Today, food for the hotel comes from its organic orchard and regenerative and bio-intensive garden, free of chemicals and pesticides. Travelers can also enjoy the hotel’s stable, which houses almost 200 horses.
Hotel Las Torres continues to grow, and the last year was no different as we received many recognitions for the vital work happening here.
Hotel Recognitions
Some of our initiatives throughout these years have given us international recognition. During the LATAM Impact Awards 2022 celebration, a special prize was awarded to the project “Conservation and restoration of the Sendero a Base Torres.”
This year, we were awarded the highest distinction of the Responsible Tourism awards in the category “Best initiatives for nature conservation” in the third edition of the WTM Latin America in São Paulo, Brazil.
And our list of recognitions continued to grow. For the third consecutive year, we obtained the EOV (Ecological Outcome Verification) certification from the Savory Institute, which monitors and verifies ecosystem function through holistic management, planned grazing, and soil regeneration in Chilean Patagonia.
We also participated in the Tourism Oscars: the World Travel Awards. We obtained two nominations in two significant categories, the first for Green Hotel Leader in South America and the second for South American Responsible Tourism, a nomination awarded to us by a group of WTA experts.
It was an excellent year for our commitment to sustainability, which we hope to continue extending during our 31st chapter.
